Lawyer Fees in the UAE | Costs & Retainer Agreements

Lawyer fees in the UAE vary because a single price cannot accurately cover every consultation, contract, claim or enforcement matter. A fee proposal is usually prepared after the type and stage of work, documents, competent authority, expected time, risks and required procedures are understood. To request an initial scope review and written fee proposal from Abdulrahman Alaamri Advocates and Legal Consultants, call +971 54 333 0000 or send a short summary through the firm’s WhatsApp.

Lawyer fees in the UAE and retainer pricing factors

How are lawyer fees determined in the UAE?

Federal Decree-Law No. 34 of 2022 permits fees to be agreed in advance according to the type, nature and circumstances of the work or under the firm’s hourly-rate system. Cabinet Resolution No. 8 of 2025 further addresses a lawyer’s right to fees and expenses and the conditions for written retainer agreements. A reliable quote therefore starts with a defined engagement, not a general estimate.

Main factors affecting the fee proposal

  • Service: consultation, written opinion, contract, negotiation, claim, appeal or enforcement.
  • Stage: preventive advice is different from a live case with an approaching deadline.
  • Documents and facts: the number of contracts, messages, reports, parties and languages.
  • Jurisdiction: court, prosecution, arbitration centre, specialist committee and Emirate.
  • Time and work: research, conferences, submissions, hearings, experts and enforcement.
  • Urgency: a short procedural deadline may require additional resources.
  • External costs: court, expert, translation, service, notarisation and arbitration charges may be separate.

Common fee structures

Fixed fee

A fixed fee may suit a clearly defined task such as reviewing one agreement, preparing a notice or handling a specified stage. The proposal should state the included meetings, revisions and appearances and identify additional work.

Hourly fees

Hourly billing may suit advisory or commercial work whose volume is difficult to predict. Agree the rate, time-recording method, reporting frequency and any spending limit requiring further approval.

Fees by stage

An engagement can be divided into initial review, negotiation, first-instance proceedings, appeal, cassation and enforcement. This makes the cost of each stage visible and avoids assuming that an initial quote covers every later procedure.

Percentage-based fees

The 2025 Executive Regulations set specific conditions, including a written agreement before work begins, a statutory maximum and a prohibition on taking an in-kind share of the claimed right. The proposed structure and facts of the matter should be reviewed before it is used.

What should a retainer agreement explain?

  1. The client’s identity and authority, the parties and the conflict-check result.
  2. The precise legal work, stage and authorities covered.
  3. The fee or calculation method, payment schedule and applicable tax.
  4. Government and third-party expenses, who pays them and when.
  5. The responsible lawyer or team and the update process.
  6. Excluded work, such as an appeal, expert process or enforcement unless stated.
  7. The client’s duties to provide accurate information, documents and timely instructions.

Do lawyer fees include court charges?

Not necessarily. Professional fees compensate the firm for legal work. Court filing, experts, legal translation, service, notarisation and arbitration may be separate payments to authorities or third parties. A useful proposal distinguishes professional fees from disbursements.

Consultation, contract and litigation costs

A consultation may be priced according to its duration, documents and whether an oral or written opinion is required. Contract-review fees depend on length, transaction value, risk, negotiation and revisions. Litigation fees depend on the type and stage of the matter, parties, hearings, experts, appeals and enforcement. Start with the firm’s legal consultation page.

Lawyer fees and power-of-attorney costs are different

Lawyer fees cover the agreed legal service. Power-of-attorney costs relate to preparing, notarising or attesting the authority document and any associated official charges. A matter may require both, but they are separate items. Read our guide to the cost of appointing a lawyer in the UAE.

How to obtain a more accurate proposal

  • Provide a short chronology, party details and the competent authority.
  • Identify the next hearing, expiry or procedural deadline.
  • Send the material contracts, notices, judgments and correspondence.
  • Explain the outcome sought and action already taken.
  • Ask for professional fees, expenses and excluded stages to be separated.

Frequently asked questions

Can I obtain a price without sending documents?

A preliminary range may be possible for a clearly defined task, but a final proposal usually requires the facts, stage and documents to avoid an incomplete or misleading estimate.

Does a higher price guarantee a better result?

No price guarantees an outcome. Registration, relevant experience, a clear strategy and engagement, communication and careful treatment of evidence and deadlines are more useful evaluation factors.

Does the engagement include appeals and enforcement?

Only if the agreement says so. First-instance proceedings, appeals and enforcement are often distinct stages and should be listed expressly.
