Preparing case documents and evidence with a lawyer in Dubai

Article Contents

Preparing your case file with a lawyer in Dubai helps use consultation time efficiently and identify missing documents, deadlines and risk before a legal step is selected. You do not need to write legal submissions yourself. The useful task is to collect facts and evidence accurately and in an organised form. Call Al Ameri Law Firm on +971 54 333 0000 or contact the office through WhatsApp.

Why organise the file before consultation?

The important fact may be inside a contract, message or receipt, but it is harder to assess when it is not connected to the date, party and event. An organised file helps the lawyer understand the matter, identify urgent deadlines and inconsistencies, and determine whether you need advice, negotiation, a notice, proceedings, a defence or enforcement.

1. Write a one-page summary

List the parties and roles, the type of relationship, what happened, and the practical result you want. Include any existing complaint, case, hearing, notice or close deadline. Do not omit a fact because you believe it may weaken the position; the lawyer needs the complete picture to assess risk.

2. Build a chronology

Use a simple table with the date, event and supporting document. Begin with the agreement or start of the relationship, then add payments, correspondence, alleged breaches, notices, meetings and procedures. If a date is uncertain, mark it as approximate instead of guessing.

3. Group documents by type

  • Identity, licence and basic party or company details.
  • Agreements, amendments, powers of attorney and guarantees.
  • Invoices, receipts, account statements and transfers.
  • Emails, messages, notices and meeting records.
  • Complaints, pleadings, judgments, hearing records and expert reports.
  • Images, recordings and digital files connected to the events.

Name files by date and subject, and retain an unchanged original when creating a working or translated copy.

4. Preserve digital evidence

A single screenshot may not show the full conversation or source information. Keep the original file and available date, sender and recipient details, and do not edit an image or recording. Admissibility and lawful use depend on the source, collection method and procedure, so obtain advice before publication or disclosure to another party.

5. Identify urgent deadlines

Place every hearing, appeal or objection deadline, notice date, payment date or contract expiry at the front of the file. Contacting a law firm does not automatically suspend a deadline. The engagement must be accepted and responsibility for the required action confirmed in writing.

6. Prepare party names for a conflict check

The firm may need the names of companies, individuals, directors and connected parties before receiving extensive sensitive details. A conflict check helps determine whether the office can accept the representation.

7. Translate documents when required

The competent authority may require certified legal translation of foreign-language documents. Do not translate every page before the relevant documents are identified. The lawyer can select what is material and identify attestation or translation requirements. See our document attestation and notary-related services.

Questions for the first meeting

  • Which information or documents are still missing?
  • What options exist and what are the main risks?
  • Which authority or procedure may apply and what is the closest deadline?
  • What is included and excluded from the engagement?
  • How are fees and disbursements calculated and updates delivered?
  • Who will manage the file and serve as the main contact?

Preparing different types of cases

Commercial and property matters

Focus on the contracts, payments, correspondence, dispute clause, and any technical or guaranteeing party. For property matters, add relevant ownership, reservation, handover or lease documents. See our real estate lawyer in Dubai service.

Civil claims and debt

Prepare the legal and documentary basis of the debt or damage, evidence of performance or breach, the amount claimed, and any acknowledgement, settlement, cheque or previous judgment.

Criminal matters

State your procedural position, complaint or case reference, authority and date, and retain original evidence. Avoid contacting another party in a way that may affect the matter before taking advice. See our criminal lawyer in Dubai page.

Family and employment

Organise relationship and identity documents, income, housing and child information, or the employment agreement, salary record, termination and messages, depending on the matter.

From file preparation to case strategy

After the information is organised, the lawyer can identify provable facts, the legal framework, competent forum and options. For matters involving several parties or procedures, see our lawyer for complex cases in Dubai page. Our experienced lawyer in Dubai guide explains how to assess relevant experience.
