Typical custody case process in Dubai and the UAE

- Identify the applicable law: nationality, religion and the civil or general personal-status regime can change the legal route.
- Family guidance or reconciliation: a dispute may be referred when appropriate, while urgent matters and cases in which reconciliation is not possible may follow a different route under the law.

The matters may be raised together or through connected applications, but success on one issue does not automatically decide the others. The requested outcome should be defined for each issue.
Joint custody for non-Muslim families
The federal Civil Personal Status Law adopts equal joint custody after divorce as the general rule for people within its scope, subject to the court’s power to modify it or award sole custody when the child’s interests require it.
